I am combining these two cruise ports into one post because, unfortunately, the weather didn’t co-operate on the day we landed in Icy Strait Point. It was pouring rain and, because we were the final cruise of the season, some things had already closed down for the season.
Icy Strait Point, Alaska
We did go ashore and managed to visit the cannery museum and learned about the importance of salmon to the people of Hoonah, Alaska. On a previous cruise, we had done an excursion to the Wildest Kitchen for a cooking class and it was amazing so I do recommend that if you visit during the regular cruise season.

Skagway, Alaska
The day in Skagway was very interesting and a lot of fun. We roamed the streets and shops, learned some history and visited the museum. Being the final cruise at this port paid off because we found stores selling their goods for 50% off so we got some great deals on souvenirs and clothing. The building you see at the end of a side street that looks a bit like a church is actually the museum. We almost didn’t venture down there but were glad we did. It was a great museum to learn about the town and the history.

We had no trouble finding things to do and filling the day with interesting things to see. Since Skagway was mainly a mining town, prostitution was what they called a necessary evil. Houses like The Brass Pic advertised as a “house of negotiable affection” which we got a chuckle over.
